Breast tissue lesions can have a variety of causes. In the case of local excision of a breast lesion (e.g. breast lump, fibrous area of the breast) a small portion of tissue comprising the lesion is excised. In the superficial forms, the excision can involve a portion of skin overlying the lesion to check if there is tumor infiltration of skin. The operation is usually performed in the Day Surgery regime.
The choice of the Day Surgery regime cannot be of an urgent nature and therefore can only take place in a programmed manner. It is established by the physician on the basis of the pathology, the proposed intervention and the clinical status of the patient and guarantees a qualified surgical performance, in conditions of absolute safety, for patients for whom a hospital stay is neither essential nor necessary.
The number of operations for local excision of a breast lesion and the percentage of procedures carried out in the Day Surgery regime were processed by accessing the data of the SDO flow (i.e. flow of Hospital Discharge Reports, source Ministry of Health) with regard to public and accredited private healthcare centres.
The “Find a healthcare centre” tool (TrovaStrutture) has been designed to provide you with as much information and services – available in public and private affiliated hospitals – as possible. In the “Healthcare centre details” section you can check, for each centre, the presence of the “Transfusion Centre” services and the “Resuscitation Service”. These services increase the timeliness of care in the event that the patient needs blood and/or intensive care, thus avoiding the possible increase in criticalities related to the surgical interventions the patient has undergone.
