Despite technological advances, organ donation remains indispensable for keeping people suffering from various diseases alive through transplantation. In medicine, the term transplant refers to the transfer of an organ or tissue from its place of origin to another, within the same person or another individual. In Italy, the National Transplant Network (RN) was developed to manage this type of intervention. This network welcomes patients and supports them throughout their pre- and post-operative care, using procedures shared by all professionals working nationwide, in accordance with the principles of transparency, fairness, safety, and the free and generous nature of the donation. Structures – National Transplant Network and Regional Centers At the regional level, the network’s focal points are the Regional (and Interregional) Transplant Centers, which coordinate donation and transplant activities by implementing the National Transplant Network’s organization throughout the region and in local communities, also interacting with health authorities and volunteer associations. This includes welcoming patients, placing them on the waiting list, and testing donors. The facilities are authorized by their respective Regions to perform transplants and must meet organizational, structural, and technological requirements, for which they are subject to monitoring and auditing.
