Peripheral arterial disease (PAD), or occlusive disease of the peripheral arteries, can be treated, depending on the stage (I–IV), with moderate therapy, open surgery, or endovascular procedures (angioplasty/stent).
The following indicators are calculated in the PNE by hospital facility and area of residence:
Stage III and IV arterial disease: lower limb amputation within 6 months of admission
Stage III and IV arterial disease: lower limb revascularization within 6 months of admission
Stage III and IV arterial disease: mortality within 6 months of admission.
The indicators measure outcomes 6 months after admission that are related to the quality of hospital care and, in part, to the patient’s care pathway from discharge.
Furthermore, the PNE calculates the “Hospitalization for stage II arterial disease” indicator, which allows us to assess the heterogeneity of this intervention’s provision at the local level, identifying areas of heterogeneity regarding the propensity for hospitalization of patients with stage II arterial disease.
